Website first, then search, then everything else. Traffic sent to a site nobody can use is wasted, so the site comes first. Search compounds while social resets with every post, so search comes second. Ads jump the queue only when you need customers this month and can afford to pay for every one. Budget roughly ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 once for the site and ₹25,000 a month for one channel done properly.
Most guides to this are written by whoever is selling the thing they recommend. This one is too — we sell all four — so the useful parts are the bits that cost us money to say. Those are marked, and there are several.
The order, and why it is not negotiable
Almost every business that comes to us has already spent money in the wrong order. Usually social media first, because it feels like the cheapest place to start and something visible happens immediately.
| Channel | Cost | First results | When you stop paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website | ₹25k–60k once | Immediately, if people arrive | You still own it |
| SEO | ₹15k–60k / month | 6–12 weeks local, 3–6 months national | Holds for months, then drifts |
| Paid ads | ₹15k–40k + budget | 2–4 weeks | Stops that afternoon |
| Social media | ₹15k–50k / month | About 3 months | Fades within weeks |
Read the last column again. It is the whole argument. Two of these keep working after the invoices stop and two do not, and that difference compounds over years into something much larger than the monthly numbers suggest.
The three times this order is wrong. If you sell something seasonal and the season is in six weeks, run ads — SEO will not arrive in time. If your customers genuinely only exist on Instagram, which is true for some salons, restaurants and boutiques, start there. And if you have no website but a fully booked calendar, spend nothing at all until that changes.
1. The website
Everything else sends people here. A site that loads in six seconds, or that nobody can contact from a phone, turns every other channel into money spent moving people to a dead end.
What it costs in India
- Business website: ₹25,000 to ₹60,000, two to four weeks
- Ecommerce: ₹60,000 to ₹1,50,000, four to eight weeks
- Web application: from ₹1,50,000, eight weeks upward
- Template site: ₹8,000 to ₹15,000, a few days
The largest variable is content, not code. A five-page site where you supply finished text and real photographs is a genuinely different job from the same five pages where somebody has to interview you, write it, and find images that are not stock. Most quote differences are this, and most projects that run late are waiting on it. The full cost breakdown is here.
The three things that decide whether it works
- Speed on a mid-range phone. Not your laptop. Two thirds of Indian traffic is mobile, often on 4G, often on a handset costing under ₹15,000.
- A visible way to get in touch on every page. Not a Contact link in the menu — a form or a number where someone is already reading.
- Structure search engines can read. Semantic headings, schema markup, internal links that describe where they go. Retrofitting this later costs more and works less well.
Costs us money to say: if your site is fast and converting, a redesign is a want rather than a need. We turn down redesigns for this reason regularly. The money almost always does more spent on getting people to the site than on making it prettier for the people already there. If it genuinely needs rebuilding, this is how we do it.
2. Search engine optimisation
The only channel where the work accumulates. A page that ranks this month keeps earning next month without further spend, which is why it is worth the wait — and the wait is real.
Local and national are different jobs
| Local | National | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it suits | Clinics, salons, showrooms, services with a catchment | Ecommerce, SaaS, anyone shipping anywhere |
| Decided by | Business Profile, reviews, consistent details | Content depth and earned links |
| Timeline | 6–12 weeks | 6 months upward |
| Cost | ₹15,000–30,000 / month | ₹30,000–60,000 / month |
Local is cheaper, faster, and skipped constantly by businesses who ask for national because it sounds more ambitious. If you have a catchment area, local is where you start. Our SEO page covers the work in detail, and the national version is here.
The number nobody tells you to check
Impressions rise before position does. In Google Search Console, under Performance, impressions for your main terms will climb weeks before rankings visibly move. If they are rising at month three while positions look unchanged, the work is landing and you are about to see it. It is free, in an account you already own, and it is the number to check when nothing else seems to be happening.
The part that can destroy a business
A cheap logo is a poor logo. A cheap website is slow. Cheap SEO can get your domain penalised, and the damage outlasts the agency by years.
The arithmetic makes it inevitable. At ₹6,000 a month, after overheads, an agency has three or four hours for your account. Real SEO does not fit in four hours, so the work becomes what can be automated: bulk directory submissions, comment links, private blog networks. Those are named directly in Google’s link spam policy, and the penalty lands on your domain, not the agency’s. The full explanation is here.
3. Paid advertising
The only channel that produces enquiries this week. It is also the only one where the money stops working the afternoon you stop spending, which makes it a tool rather than a strategy.
What it costs in India
- Google Ads: ₹10 to ₹150 per click depending on industry. Legal, insurance and education are the expensive end.
- Meta ads: ₹0.50 to ₹5 per click, cheaper per click and usually lower intent.
- Management: ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 a month, separate from the ad budget.
- Minimum useful test: ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 over two or three weeks. Less produces data too thin to learn anything from.
Work out what you can afford per enquiry. If a customer is worth ₹2,000 and one enquiry in five becomes a customer, you can afford about ₹400 per enquiry. If clicks cost ₹40 and one visitor in twenty enquires, that is ₹800 an enquiry — and the channel loses money no matter how well it is run.
Costs us money to say: that calculation disqualifies a lot of businesses from paid ads, and we do it at the first conversation rather than three months into a retainer. Nobody selling ad management volunteers it, because for a meaningful number of small businesses in India the honest answer is that the numbers do not work yet.
The most expensive habit on Meta
Boosting a post is the most expensive way to buy reach. It is one button, which is why everyone uses it, and it gives you almost none of the targeting and none of the testing that makes advertising work. A proper campaign in Ads Manager costs the same money and buys placements, audiences, creative testing and conversion tracking. The Boost button buys reach and a number. How we run campaigns is here.
4. Social media
The channel most often sold on activity, because activity is visible and results are slow. A monthly report showing twelve posts and 4,000 impressions describes work that happened. It does not describe whether anybody enquired.
The platforms reward opposite things
| YouTube | ||
|---|---|---|
| Rewards | Depth and watch time | Frequency and saves |
| A post lives | Years — search keeps it moving | About 48 hours |
| Best cadence | One good video a week | Three to five a week |
| Suits | Considered purchases | Visual and impulse |
Using one posting schedule for both is why most business accounts go quiet by month four. On YouTube, one good video beats three rushed ones, because a video people leave teaches the algorithm the channel is weak. On Instagram the opposite holds. The growth guide covers this properly.
How money actually arrives on Instagram in India
Not through platform payouts. The Reels Play bonus was discontinued in most markets and India never had a broad revenue share. Income comes from brand deals at around 10,000 engaged followers, affiliate links, and selling your own products — that last one works from day one and is the only route that matters for most businesses. Instagram costs and monetisation, in full.
Costs us money to say: this is the service we most often talk people out of. If you have a hundred website visitors a month and no working enquiry form, posting three times a week fixes nothing. For most B2B and professional services, search brings better enquiries for the same money and social works better as support than as the main channel.
India versus international
An Indian agency can absolutely do international work — the technical work is identical. What differs is competition and therefore cost, and this is where a lot of money gets wasted.
| India | US / UK / Australia | |
|---|---|---|
| SEO timeline | 3–6 months | 9–18 months |
| Cost per click | ₹10–150 | Often 5–20× higher |
| Links needed | Moderate | Considerably more, and harder to earn |
| Content standard | High | Higher — and written for that market's ear |
An agency quoting Indian prices for US-level competition either does not understand the difference or is hoping you do not. Ranking in a competitive US category is a year of work against sites with a decade of authority. That does not make it impossible; it makes it a different budget and a different conversation.
What does travel well: technical work, development, content production, and campaigns for Indian diaspora audiences. What travels badly: assuming an Indian SEO budget buys American results. Our India-wide services are here.
What it all costs together
Three realistic starting points, using the numbers above. None of these includes ad spend, which is separate and yours to control.
Starting out
New business, needs to exist online
Results from month three
- Business website, ₹25k–40k once
- Local SEO, ₹15k a month
- Nothing else until that works
Established, growing
Has customers, wants more
Enquiries from week three
- SEO, ₹30k a month
- Ad management, ₹15k plus budget
- Site fixes as needed
Competing seriously
National or crowded category
Six months to judge fairly
- National SEO, ₹60k
- Ads and social, ₹40k
- Content produced continuously
The mistake that costs most. Spending ₹60,000 on a website and leaving nothing for getting people to it. A ₹60,000 site nobody visits is worse than a ₹25,000 one with ₹35,000 behind it. The build is the easy thing to buy because it is a deliverable you can look at — getting found is the harder, less satisfying, more valuable half.
How to tell whether any of it is working
One question separates an agency doing real work from one sending reports.
“How many enquiries came from each channel last month, and what did each one cost?” An agency doing real work answers within a day. If the reply is impressions, reach and engagement rate with no enquiry count anywhere in it, the work is not being measured against anything that pays you.
Impressions, reach, followers, likes and page views are not meaningless — they describe whether anyone saw the work. But none of them is what you are buying, and a report built entirely from them is usually hiding that enquiries have not moved. Five questions to ask your current agency are here.
Common questions
How much does digital marketing cost in India?
One channel done properly starts around ₹25,000 a month. A website is a separate one-off cost of ₹25,000 to ₹60,000. SEO runs ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 a month depending on whether you compete locally or nationally, and ad management is ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 plus the ad budget itself. Most small businesses should start with one channel rather than splitting a small budget across four.
What should a business do first — website, SEO, ads or social media?
The website, then search, then everything else. Traffic sent to a site nobody can use is wasted, so the site comes first. Search compounds and social resets with every post, so search comes next. Ads jump the queue only when you need customers this month and can afford to pay for every one.
How long before digital marketing produces results?
Paid ads produce enquiries within two to four weeks. Local SEO shows in six to twelve weeks. National SEO takes three to six months, longer in crowded markets. Social media takes about three months to show a pattern. Judge each channel on its own timeline rather than one blanket period.
Is digital marketing worth it for a small business in India?
Only if the numbers work: what a customer is worth, how many enquiries become customers, and what you can afford to pay for one. If a customer is worth ₹2,000 and one in five enquiries converts, you can afford about ₹400 per enquiry. If ads cost ₹800, that channel loses money regardless of how well it is run. Do that calculation before spending anything.
Can an Indian agency handle international clients?
Yes, and the work itself is the same. What differs is competition and cost. Ranking in the US or UK is considerably harder and more expensive than ranking in India, and an agency quoting Indian prices for US-level competition either does not understand the difference or is hoping you do not.
What is the difference between local and national digital marketing?
Local competes within a catchment area and is decided by your Google Business Profile, reviews and consistent details across directories. National competes across the country and is decided by content depth and earned links. Local is cheaper, faster and skipped constantly, which is why it is usually where a business should start.
How do I know if my digital marketing is working?
Ask for one number: how many enquiries came from each channel last month, and what each one cost. A report full of impressions, reach and engagement rate with no enquiry count is not a report on results. If nobody can produce that number, the work is not being measured against anything that pays you.
Should I hire an agency or do digital marketing in-house?
In-house beats an agency on cost over two years if you have enough work to keep somebody busy and a person who can manage them. It fails when that person leaves and nobody knows what they were doing. Agencies suit businesses in between — enough work to need it done properly, not enough to justify a salary.
