This is the condensed version — for the full walkthrough with examples, see Apensia's Google AI Overviews & GEO guide. The short list:
The checklist
- Answer first, explain second — open each section with a direct one- or two-sentence answer before the supporting detail, so a generated summary has a clean sentence to lift.
- Structure it explicitly — clear H2/H3 headings, FAQ-style Q&A pairs, short paragraphs, and real schema markup (Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, Organization).
- Don't hide the answer behind an interaction — content that only loads after a click or script finishes is often invisible to crawlers, AI crawlers included; server-rendered HTML has a real advantage here.
- Check robots.txt isn't accidentally blocking AI crawlers — GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and similar, which happens by accident more often than expected, especially behind a CDN.
- Be specific, not generic — a narrow, concrete example matches a real question better than a broad category term.
- Earn mentions you don't control — reviews, other sites' roundups, and consistent business details across the web read as independent confirmation, which carries more weight than anything written on the page itself.
What this checklist deliberately doesn't promise
No agency, including this one, can guarantee a specific page gets selected into an AI Overview — Google doesn't publish that selection logic. This checklist removes reasons a system would have to skip a page; it doesn't promise a specific placement, and anything claiming otherwise is guessing.
Where this fits into an SEO engagement
This checklist is applied as part of Apensia's standard technical SEO audit (₹15,000) — it isn't sold separately as a premium "AI optimization" add-on, since most of it is the same structural work that helps ordinary rankings too.
FAQ
What's the fastest way to check if AI crawlers can even see my content?
Confirm robots.txt isn't blocking GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot, and check that the actual answer text is present in the page's raw HTML (view source), not only rendered afterward by JavaScript in the browser.
Does adding FAQPage schema guarantee AI Overview citation?
No — schema helps a system parse the page's structure more easily, but it's one input among several, not a guarantee. Google doesn't publish exactly how pages are selected for AI Overviews.
Is this checklist different from normal SEO best practice?
Mostly it's the same fundamentals (clear structure, real schema, crawlable content) applied with an additional goal — being easy for a generative system to extract and cite, not just easy for a person to read and Google to rank.
