How the Music Industry Is Growing on YouTube — and How to Earn From Songs, Videos and the Partner Program

YouTube paid the global music industry more than $8 billion in a single 12-month stretch, and it now sits beside streaming apps as a place where songs actually earn. This guide explains why the industry is growing there, the strategies that move the needle, every way a song can pay you, how the YouTube Partner Program fits in, and how to earn from your videos even if you don't make music.

The short answer

Musicians earn on YouTube in layers: streams of an official release (via a distributor), ads and Premium revenue on videos you upload (needs the Partner Program), Content ID money when others use your song, Shorts revenue sharing, and fan funding such as memberships, Supers and merch. Anyone else earns through the same Partner Program plus sponsorships, affiliate sales and their own products. No layer is guaranteed, so the winning move is stacking several.

How big is music on YouTube right now?

The scale is the reason artists treat YouTube as a core platform instead of a promo channel. In October 2025 YouTube said it had paid out more than $8 billion to the music industry between July 2024 and June 2025, and described the model as a "twin engine" of ads and subscriptions.

Why the music industry is growing on YouTube

Streaming now carries the whole industry

The IFPI reports that streaming brought in more than $22 billion in 2025, 69.6% of global recorded music income, with 837 million paid subscription accounts. Paid subscriptions alone made up 52.4% of revenue. YouTube benefits because it is the one big platform that combines free, ad-supported listening with a paid tier, so it earns from fans who never subscribe to anything.

Growth is global, not just Western

Every region grew in 2025 according to the IFPI. Latin America rose 17.1%, Asia 10.9% (with China up 20.1%) and sub-Saharan Africa 15.2%. Video-first platforms suit these markets because listeners discover music by watching, sharing clips and building playlists, not by browsing a streaming catalogue.

Video turns a song into a catalog of assets

One song can become an official release, a music video, a lyric video, a live session, a behind-the-scenes clip and dozens of Shorts, each one a separate chance to be found. That multiplication is what makes YouTube different from audio-only apps.

Key strategies that actually work for music on YouTube

The platform rules below are sourced; the playbook around them is our read of how those rules reward behaviour. Treat it as a framework to test, not a promise of results.

  1. Release officially before you upload casually. Delivering your track through a distributor or label makes it an official release on YouTube Music. That is also the first requirement for an Official Artist Channel.
  2. Claim your Official Artist Channel. It merges subscribers from your topic channel and existing channels and unlocks ticketing, merch and Analytics for Artists. YouTube asks for at least one official release plus one qualifier such as being in the Partner Program.
  3. Use Shorts for discovery, long-form for depth. Short clips of the hook or chorus bring new listeners in. Long-form videos, such as lyric videos, live sessions and stories behind the song, are what build the public watch hours that Partner Program ad eligibility counts.
  4. Release on a rhythm. From February 1, 2027 YouTube will keep a channel active if it uploads 2 long-form videos or 5 Shorts every 90 days, among other options. A steady cadence also gives the algorithm more to recommend.
  5. Build playlists and series. Grouping songs by mood, language or release era keeps people watching one video after another, which raises watch time.
  6. Make Content ID work for you. When fans use your song in their own videos, a matched claim can send revenue to you instead of nobody. It needs a distributor or label with Content ID access and exclusive rights to the material.
  7. Collaborate across audiences. Features, duets and remixes introduce your music to channels with different fans. Agree the rights split in writing before release.
  8. Keep your rights clean. Uncleared samples, covers without a licence and artificial views can lead to claims or lost monetization. Active strikes also block Partner Program eligibility.
  9. Diversify beyond one platform. Spotify alone paid more than $11 billion in 2025, and roughly half of that was generated by independent artists and labels. A distributor lets one upload feed many services.

The YouTube Partner Program for musicians and creators

The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) is the gate to ads, Premium revenue and fan funding on your own channel. Its rules are changing on February 1, 2027, so the table below shows today's bar and the new one.

TierTodayFrom Feb 1, 2027
Fan funding, Shopping, Creator Partnerships500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days, plus 3,000 watch hours or 3M Shorts viewsUnchanged
Ads and Premium revenue1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours (12 months) or 10M Shorts views (90 days)1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 watch hours or 20M Shorts views
Shorts creator pool payoutsPartner Program with the Shorts moduleAlso needs 10M qualified Shorts views in 90 days to earn monthly

Joining also needs 2-step verification, no active Community Guidelines strikes, an AdSense account and a supported country. Only public long-form watch hours count; Shorts, live streams, unlisted and private videos do not. See YouTube's pages for Partner Program eligibility and the 2027 changes, and our deeper breakdown in YouTube Partner Program 2027 changes, explained.

If you are an artist, do this in your first 90 days

  • Pick a distributor that delivers to YouTube Music and offers Content ID, then release your best two or three tracks.
  • Open your Studio account properly: turn on 2-step verification and link AdSense so approval is not delayed later.
  • Apply for an Official Artist Channel once your first release is live.
  • Publish a long-form video for each song and a handful of Shorts around each hook.
  • Track watch hours monthly against 3,000 (fan funding) and 8,000 (ads from 2027), not just views.

Not a musician? The best ways to earn from YouTube videos

The Partner Program is the same for everyone; what differs is the content. The channels that earn most reliably combine several of these:

  • Ads and Premium revenue once you pass the ads tier.
  • Memberships, Supers and gifts from a loyal audience, available at the lower tier.
  • Affiliate and Shopping. YouTube announced at Made On YouTube 2026 that its Affiliate Program is expanding to 35 countries by the end of 2026 (YouTube Blog).
  • Sponsorships and brand deals that grow with a clear niche and steady views.
  • Your own offer: services, courses, products or a business that videos bring leads to.

Which niches and countries pay best is a separate question, covered in highest-paying YouTube niches and countries (2026), and the new tools creators got this year are in what's new on YouTube for creators in 2026.

People also ask: YouTube monetization and earning from music

How do you earn money from YouTube?

You earn on YouTube through several separate streams: ad and YouTube Premium revenue once you join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), fan funding such as channel memberships, Supers and gifts, YouTube Shopping and affiliate commissions, Shorts revenue sharing, and income that happens off-platform such as sponsorships and selling your own products. Musicians add streams from official releases on YouTube Music and Content ID claims. Most channels that earn well combine several of these rather than relying on one.

How does YouTube monetization work?

YouTube monetization means earning money from your channel through the YouTube Partner Program. You apply once you meet the eligibility rules, YouTube reviews the channel against its monetization policies, and if approved you can switch on revenue features such as ads, Premium revenue share, memberships and Shopping. Earnings are paid through an AdSense account linked to the channel.

How many subscribers do you need to get paid on YouTube?

Today the ads and Premium tier needs 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. A lower fan-funding tier opens at 500 subscribers with 3 public uploads in 90 days and either 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views. From February 1, 2027 the ads and Premium watch-hour and Shorts-view bars rise to 8,000 hours or 20 million views, while the subscriber requirement stays at 1,000.

Does YouTube pay musicians for streams?

Yes. A song released through a music distributor or label can earn from listens on YouTube Music and from YouTube Premium and ad-supported plays of the official release. YouTube said it paid more than $8 billion to the global music industry between July 2024 and June 2025. How much an individual artist earns depends on their rights splits, their distributor's terms and how many people stream the track.

How do I monetize my songs on YouTube?

Distribute your song through a music distributor so it becomes an official release, claim an Official Artist Channel, upload official videos to your own channel, join the YouTube Partner Program for ad and Premium revenue, and make sure your distributor enables Content ID so reuse of your track in other people's videos can earn too. Keep the master and composition rights clean, because claims on uncleared samples or covers can redirect or block earnings.

Do I need the YouTube Partner Program to earn from my music?

Not for everything. Streams of an official release delivered through a distributor, and Content ID claims on other people's videos, generally do not depend on your own channel being in the Partner Program. YPP matters for ad and Premium revenue on videos you upload to your own channel, and for fan-funding tools like memberships and Supers at the lower tier.

What is Content ID and how does it help artists earn?

Content ID is YouTube's matching system. A rights holder supplies reference files, and YouTube automatically generates claims on uploaded videos that match them. It is available only to partners using the system, which is why independent artists usually reach it through a distributor or label. It requires exclusive rights to the claimed material.

What is a YouTube Official Artist Channel?

An Official Artist Channel brings an artist's subscribers and content from different channels, such as their topic channel and existing channel, into one place. YouTube's requirements include a single music-focused artist channel, at least one official release delivered through a distributor or label, and one more qualifier such as being in the Partner Program or working with a YouTube partner. It also unlocks tools such as ticketing, merch and Analytics for Artists.

How much do YouTube Shorts pay for music?

YouTube pools ad revenue from between-video placements in the Shorts feed each month and splits it by each creator's share of engaged views. Creators keep 45% of their allocated revenue whether or not music was used, but when music is used part of the pool pays for music licensing. With one track, half goes to the creator pool; with two tracks, one third. From February 1, 2027 a creator needs at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days to earn from the pool.

Can I earn from YouTube without making videos?

Not directly on your own channel, because earning needs content. But you can earn without appearing on camera: music and audio releases, lyric videos and visualizers, screen-recording tutorials, faceless explainers, or licensing your footage. Musicians can also earn from streams and Content ID even when other people's videos, not their own, carry the song.

What is the best way to earn from videos?

There is no single best way. Channels that earn steadily usually stack three layers: platform revenue (ads, Premium, Shorts), fan revenue (memberships, Supers, merch) and off-platform revenue (sponsorships, services, courses or products). Start by building a repeatable upload rhythm in one niche, then add layers as your audience grows.

Is music on YouTube growing?

Yes. YouTube reported more than 125 million Music and Premium subscribers (including trials) and over 2 billion logged-in viewers watching music videos each month, and its $8 billion music payout was up from about $6 billion in 2022. Industry-wide, the IFPI reports global recorded music revenue grew 6.4% to $31.7 billion in 2025, the eleventh straight year of growth.
