Link Building Strategies That Still Work in India

Backlinks remain one of the strongest ranking signals Google confirms using — and one of the easiest to get penalized for chasing the wrong way. Here's what's actually sustainable.

What actually works

  • Genuine guest posting — contributing real, useful content to relevant industry sites in exchange for a byline link, not paying for placement on sites that exist purely to sell links.
  • Digital PR — original data, a genuinely newsworthy angle, or expert commentary that journalists and industry sites want to cite on their own, which earns links without directly asking for them.
  • Legitimate business directories — GoodFirms, Clutch, industry-specific and India-specific directories (JustDial, Sulekha and similar) that real buyers actually use to find vendors, not link farms disguised as directories.
  • Broken-link building — finding dead links on relevant resource pages and suggesting a live replacement (ideally the site's own content), which offers real value to the linking site rather than just asking for a favour.
  • Resource page outreach — getting listed on existing "best tools" or "recommended resources" pages that are already curating links in a category, when the site or tool genuinely belongs there.

What to avoid

Private blog networks (PBNs), bulk-purchased links, link exchanges at scale, and any service promising a specific number of backlinks for a flat fee are all in Google's explicit link scheme guidelines as things that can trigger a manual action — a penalty, not a boost. The risk isn't theoretical: sites have lost most or all of their organic visibility overnight after a manual link spam action, and recovery (disavowing the links, waiting for reconsideration) takes far longer than building the links took in the first place.

Why quality and relevance beat volume

A handful of links from genuinely relevant, reasonably authoritative sites in the same industry does more for rankings than a hundred low-quality directory links — Google's algorithms weigh link relevance and the linking site's own authority heavily, not just raw count. This is also why a backlink audit matters as much as building new links: an existing profile full of spammy or irrelevant links can actively hold a site back, independent of any new link building.

How Apensia approaches link building

Apensia starts with a backlink audit (₹15,000–₹25,000) to establish whether an existing link profile is helping or working against rankings, before any new link building begins — the same order recommended above. Ongoing link and authority work is scoped as part of the broader SEO service (₹30,000–₹60,000/month for city, regional or national coverage), not sold as a standalone "buy X links" package.

FAQ

Are paid backlinks always against Google's guidelines?

Any link exchanged for payment, product, or service specifically to manipulate PageRank or rankings falls under Google's link scheme guidelines, whether or not it's disclosed as an ad — the exceptions are links properly marked rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow", which don't pass ranking value in the first place.

How many backlinks does a website need to rank well?

There's no fixed number — relevance and the linking site's own authority matter far more than raw count, and a site can outrank a competitor with ten times more links if those links are more relevant and higher quality.

What should happen first: link building or a backlink audit?

The audit — building new links on top of an existing profile that already has a spam problem wastes effort, and in some cases an existing bad link profile is actively suppressing rankings that new links alone won't fix.
