YouTube Monetization Policy — Common Questions
What are YouTube's new monetization requirements for 2027?
Starting February 1, 2027, new applicants to the YouTube Partner Program need 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 public watch hours in the past 12 months or 20 million Shorts views in the past 90 days — double the current 4,000 hours / 10 million views. The 500-subscriber fan-funding tier is unchanged.
Will existing creators lose monetization because of this change?
No. Creators already approved for the Partner Program are grandfathered in and don't need to meet the new 8,000-hour bar. They do need to accept updated monetization Terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027, or earning from the affected modules pauses starting February 1.
What is the January 31, 2027 deadline?
It's the deadline for existing Partner Program creators to accept updated Terms covering the Watch Page Monetization Module, Shorts Monetization Module, and Commerce Product Module in YouTube Studio. Missing it pauses earnings from those features starting February 1, 2027.
Does the change affect Shorts monetization differently?
Yes — from February 1, 2027, every Partner Program channel needs a rolling 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days to keep earning ad and subscription revenue specifically from Shorts. Falling below that pauses Shorts revenue only; long-form ad revenue is unaffected, and Shorts revenue resumes automatically once the threshold is crossed again.
Should I apply for the Partner Program before February 2027?
If you're close to 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views, applying before February 1, 2027 means qualifying under the current, lower threshold rather than the doubled one that applies to new applicants afterward.
